Note for Referees 

Give your full name, university and email address, and your opinion of the candidate's intellectual ability, knowledge in their field, motivation for research, capacity to work in a group, oral and written expression.

You may write in a language other than English, but  English or French will guarantee the widest possible reading. If in doubt contact ReferenceRes@eui.eu 

  • Submit reference letter using the on-line reference form  
  • Referees may use the EUI template (dowload the EUI Confidential Report in English French Italian German  – Spanish ) or  send a free text.
  • References supplied on-line should be Rtf or Pdf files. Please use standard international fonts, avoid macros, special characters, password-protected attachments, electronic signatures, logos.
  • Do not send a hard copy

 

Note for Candidates 

Give the names of two referees on your application form. If you are applying to the Economics Department, specify three referees. Letters of reference received by the EUI will be matched with the names on the form. Any letter not matching these names will be automatically disregarded. 

Referees can send their references before you submit your application, but you are responsible for ensuring that references submitted by your referees reach the EUI by the deadline of 31 January.

Letters of reference from current full-time or part-time EUI professors are not accepted except:

  • where the application is from a researcher already registered for an EUI degree (i.e. transfer from LL.M. to Ph.D.)
  • where the professor is a member of a different EUI department to the one where the candidate is applying, and who is able to comment on the academic qualities of the candidate
