The Department of History and Civilization is staffed by resident full-time professors who are appointed to the EUI initially for five years, and who can be renewed for three more years, and by visiting professors who may be appointed on a short-term basis to teach a particular seminar.

The faculty come from a wide range of universities throughout Europe and beyond. Their main tasks are to teach and supervise researchers, and to pursue their research. Former professors, in cooperation with an internally appointed tutor, continue their supervisory tasks after their departure and occasionally participate in research activities.
