Can I apply for the LL.M. and the Ph.D. programmes at the same time?

The LL.M. programme is for one year and the Ph.D. programme is for four years. At the end of the first year of the Ph.D. programme however, all those successfully admitted to the 2nd year will be awarded the LL.M. degree. So if you would like to stay for 4 years at the EUI, then apply directly to the Ph.D. programme, and if you prefer to stay only one year in Florence, then apply for the LL.M. programme.

Can I continue a doctoral degree or present a doctoral thesis without attending seminars?

All Ph.D. researchers admitted to the EUI must be permanently resident in Florence for the duration of the course and while in receipt of a grant. The Law Department insists on full and regular participation in a specific number of seminars each term. Full information can be found on the Academic Service webpages  and on the Researchers' Guide to the Department of Law .

Where can I find information on scholarships  in your department for the LL.M. or Ph.D.?

You will find all the information about scholarships on the Grants and Tuition Fees webpage . If there is any further information you require on admissions, please write to applyres@eui.eu  and a member of our Academic Service will be able to help you.

What is the procedure for admission to the Ph.D. programme?

You will find full information on the admissions procedure on the Academic Service webpages .

How much does it cost to do a Ph.D. at the European University Institute?

You will find full information on availability of grants and the question of fees on the Grants and Tuition Fees webpage

Can I attend Law Department seminars and research activities without being registered as a Ph.D. or an LL.M. researcher?

The Law Department does admit a restricted number of Visiting Students for short periods in order to do Ph.D. research, and information can be found on our Visitors' webpage . Please note carefully the conditions attached to such applications.

How are Ph.D. supervisors selected for Ph.D. researchers?

Should your application be successful, your supervisor would be chosen in agreement among the professors with the relevant expertise, the Head of Department and the Director of Graduate Studies, taking into account your needs as well as the relevant expertise and workload of the Law professors.
