Biographical Profile

Before joining the EUI in September 2010, Giorgio Monti taught law at the University of Leicester (1993-2001) and at the London School of Economics (2001-2010), he is an Italian national but he received his legal training in the UK.

He has taught across a diverse set of courses; while his main research focus is in the field of competition law, He has engaged in research projects in fields ranging from feminist legal studies, to commercial law, to comparative tort law. 

Fields of Research

His current research is in the fields of economic law, specifically competition law and utilities regulation. He uses an eclectic range of methods in his work and he welcomes candidates wishing to pursue research in any field of economic law, competition law, and regulation.

Current Research Projects

• Competition Law Intersections: a study of how competition law relates to other legal disciplines and how complementarities and contradictions are managed.
• The remedial potential of competition law: a study on what sort of remedies are appropriate in competition law, and how far the present practice deploys competition law beyond its legitimate limits.
• Euro-crisis law (together with many colleagues in  the law department): a study of how Members States of the European Union are implementing EU legislation to rescue the Euro.
• Decentralised enforcement in practice: a study of how five jurisdictions have applied EU competition law, considering how far this has been a success.
• Regulatory holidays: should the application of competition law be suspended as a reward for firms that have made significant investments in innovation? A study of the theoretical and practical possibilities of this regulatory technique.
