Theories, Processes and Structures of Interaction Between Legal Systems

A common theme of the work of many members of the Department past (Christian Joerges, Ernst-Ulrich Petersmann, Pierre-Marie Dupuy, Neil Walker, Wojciech Sadurski) and present (Loïc Azoulai, Marise Cremona, Claire Kilpatrick, Dennis Patterson, Miguel Poiares Maduro, Ruth Rubio Marin and Martin Scheinin) is the interaction between legal systems and the impact of the European Union on these interactions. We work on the relations between courts and judicial systems, the import and export of norms at regional and international levels, and theoretical approaches to the relations between legal systems, including constitutionalism and pluralism.
