How to Apply as a Visitor

 Deadlines for applications

All applications for the appointment of Visiting Fellows and Visiting Students will be considered together at departmental meetings three times a year according to the following deadlines.

The deadlines listed are the latest dates by which applications may be made for the Terms that will follow.

Applications for admission at a later date to later terms may be made as early as you wish and will be considered by the first deadline that follows application.

Application deadlines for 2012-13 are:

  • First Term: For a visit during the 1st Term (October-December 2012) the request should be made at the latest by 2 April 2012, in order to receive a decision in May
  • Second Term: For a visit during the 2nd Term (January-March 2013) the request should be made at the latest by 24 September 2012, in order to receive a decision in October
  • Third Term: For a visit during the 3rd Term (April-June 2013) the request should be made at the latest by 7 December 2012, in order to receive a decision in January

Visiting Fellows

Post-doctoral scholars or the equivalent may be appointed as Visiting Fellows. All requests must be approved first by the Law Department and then by the Executive Committee of the Academic Council.

We do not normally make appointments for more than 2-3 months, nor do we make them between June-August when there are no academic activities. In order to be fair to all applicants, repeat appointments as Visiting Fellow will not be made.

Detailed applications stating the purpose and dates of the visit should be addressed together with a curriculum vitae to the Head of Department  according to the timetable listed above, with a copy to Siobhán Gallagher .

Visiting Students

Post-graduate students registered in a similar Ph.D. programme at another university or institute may be appointed as visiting students, but we do not accept LL.M. students.

The Department normally appoints visiting students for no more than 2-3 months, and only in very exceptional cases might a visit be longer.  The EUI Admissions Committee will then normally have to approve the visit. No visit may exceed 10 months. In order to be fair to all applicants, repeat appointments as Visiting Student will not be made.

Professors of the Law Department are not normally available for consultations with visiting students, unless agreement is reached in advance with a specific professor who will act as a tutor during the student’s stay.

Detailed applications stating the purpose and dates of the visit should be addressed, together with a curriculum vitae, an outline of the current Ph.D. research and a supporting reference letter from the supervisor of the research, to Siobhán Gallagher  according to the timetable given above.

If an applicant for the status of visiting student needs a certificate in order to obtain a subsidy or grant from any source, he/she will have to provide the exact address of the grant-awarding authority and a template of the relevant type of certificate by e-mail at least two weeks in advance.

Please note that the EUI is not an Italian university and should not be considered as such for the purpose of a research visit.

No degree will be delivered or papers marked for credit by the Law Department for visiting students. A certificate of attendance will be provided.

External Library Users

External scholars seeking access to the Library to pursue their research must submit their requests directly to the Library .

They will not be considered as either visiting fellows or visiting students and will not be able to follow the Law Department’s seminars.

The Department will not issue certificates of acceptance or of attendance for Library users.
