Short Biography 

Born in 1967, Pascal Vennesson is professor of political science, Joint Chair RSCAS, Professor of Security Studies at the European University Institute, Social and Political Science Department and Robert Schuman Center for Advanced Studies.

He obtained his Ph.D. in political science from the Institute of political studies in Paris (Sciences-Po) and was Post-Doctoral Fellow at Stanford University's Center for International Security and Arms Control, at the Mershon Center, Ohio State University, and research associate at the Center for Science and International Affairs, The John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Professeur agrégé des universités (full professor tenured) (1997), he taught at the University of Tours, and since 2000 at the University Panthéon-Assas, Paris II where he is on leave. He was Professorial Lecturer in International Relations at the Bologna Center of the Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University from 2000 to 2004.

Prof. Vennesson served in the French Ministry of Defense from 1999 to 2003 as Director of the Center for social science studies of defense (Centre d'études en sciences sociales de la défense-Secrétariat général pour l'administration) where he was responsible for promoting policy-relevant social science research on defense policy.

He is the author of Les chevaliers de l'air. Aviation et conflits au XXème siècle [Air Knights. Air power and conflict in the 20th century] (Paris, Presses de Science Po, 1997), Sociologie militaire. Armées, guerre et paix [Military Sociology. Armed forces, war and peace] (Paris, Armand Colin-Sociologie, 2000) (with Theodore Caplow), editor of, Politiques de défense. Institutions, innovations, européanisation [Defense Policies. Institutions, innovations, europeanization] (Paris, L'Harmattan-Logiques politiques, 2000), and Dictionnaire des relations internationales. Approches, concepts, doctrines. [Dictionary of International Relations] (with Marie-Claude Smouts et Dario Battistella). Paris, Dalloz, 2003. His articles have appeared in Cultures et Conflits, The Journal of Strategic Studies, National Security Quarterly, Politix, Revue française de science politique, La Revue Tocqueville-The Tocqueville Review.

He is currently working on the changing utility of military power in international politics, and on Europe's power and impact worldwide.
