Gaby Umbach holds a PhD in Political Science (2007) and a M.A. in Political Science, Italian as well as Portuguese Language and Literature (2000) both from the University of Cologne. Since 2000 she is Senior Research Associate at the Jean Monnet Chair of Political Science and, since 2009, also at the Seminar for Social Policy at the University of Cologne. In both positions she is engaged in research and teaching on European integration and the European Union.

Her fields of expertise include research and publications on European integration and European integration theories, Europeanisation studies and Multilevel Governance, European/national employment and socio-economic policies as well as policy co-ordination, European/national environmental and climate change policies, constitutionalisation and institutionalisation of the EU, EU enlargement, system transformation as well as curricula development in EU studies.

During her 2010/11 Jean Monnet Fellowship at the EUI she extended her field of specialisation towards international relations and global governance, global policy crisis as well as global institutional reactions. Her current research project is entitled “Global policy crises and institutional responses of the early 21st century - Emerging logics of an ‘inter-sectoral trans-level international institutionalism’?”.
