Official Opening of the Academic Year 2011-2012: "The Economic and Political Challenges for Europe"

Herman Van Rompuy

On 11 November, the European University Institute (EUI) celebrates the official opening of its Academic Year. The festive ceremony to take place in the Church of the Badia Fiesolana from 15:00 to 16:00, features a keynote lecture of the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, entitled "The Economic and Political Challenges for Europe".

Futhermore, the President of the EUI Josep Borrell gives an outline on “The European University Institute in 2011-2012” as well as on the newly created Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa Chair.

Herman Van Rompuy is the first President of the European Council under the Treaty of Lisbon and he took up this position in January 2010. Previously, he served as Belgian Prime Minister and he had different functions in the Belgium government. The President studied Applied Economics at the Catholic University of Leuven and holds various honorary awards and doctorates.

The Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa Chair in ‘European Economic and Monetary Integration’ will be inaugurated in the beginning of 2012 and will focus on monetary politics, European monetary integration and on the role Europe’s single currency plays in the global economy.
