A two-day event exploring political actors and transnational democracy will be held on 25 and 26 October, organised by the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
The workshop will be opened by Professor Michael Saward from the University of Warwick, who will speak on ‘Shape shifting representation’. Two panels follow, bringing EUI and University of Leuven academics together to discuss the questioning and developing representative democracy.
Professor Richard Bellamy from University College London will conclude the first day with a lecture on ‘Three models of democracy, political community and representation in the EU’.
Day two brings two further keynote addresses; Professor John Erik Fossum, from ARENA Centre for European Studies, will talk about EU democratisation while EUI Emeritus Professor Philippe Schmitter’s address focuses on ‘Crisis and mutation in the institutions of representation in ‘real‐existing’ democracies’.
The two panels on 26 October include participants from the University of Vienna, Carlo Alberto College in Turin and Goethe University Frankfurt. They will continue the previous day’s discussion by looking at beyond the Lisbon Treaty and at new forms of representative democracy.
