The Religion and Politics Working Group is one of the various working groups hosted by the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. It is a forum for those interested in work related to religion and politics broadly defined. It is open to all members and guests of the EUI and we particularly encourage visiting scholars to present their work to the group.

European Christian Democracy

Abstract:
Christian Democracy has played a major role in the domestic politics of numerous European countries, as well as in the creation of a transnational political order across the continent. The aim of the workshop is to trace the intellectual origins of this political movement, discuss the complex relationship that it had with the Catholic Church, and to determine the role it played in the process of European integration. Finally, we would like to assess the current shape of Christian Democratic movement, to understand whether it is still a distinctive political phenomenon. In order to address these problems, we have invited several distinguished political scientists, historians and philosophers working on different aspects of Christian Democratic phenomena. The workshop will open with a keynote lecture delivered by Jan Werner Mueller (Princeton University) entitled "Christian Democracy: Towards a New Intellectual History." An important part of the event will be a presentation of Alcido de Gasperi’s private documents, now based in the Historical Archives of the European Union.
