Matej Avbelj graduated first in his law class from University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2003 and was awarded Faculty’s Grade Point Average Acknowledgment. Simultaneously, he has been studying history at Ljubljana Faculty of Arts. In 2004 Matej received his LL.M degree from NYU School of Law where he spent a year as a Hauser Scholar. For distinct achievements in his specialization he was awarded George Collin's Award by NYU School of Law. Since September 2005 he has been a PhD researcher in Law at the European University Institute, Florence Italy.
Matej has been active in various fields. He was a student editor on the Ljubljana University Student Law Review 'Pamfil`, where he founded a special rubric Ius Constitutionalis dedicated to constitutionality, legality and human rights. He worked briefly in a bank and as a practitioner in a law firm, and he spent nearly two years at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia where he conducted comparative constitutional law researches. In 2004-2005 he worked as a trainee in the Department for Constitutional Affairs and Civil Liberties in the European Parliament in Brussels. In the same period he also contributed to the establishment of the Law Institute in Ljubljana that he currently chairs.
His broad range of interests covers the fields of EU law, constitutionalism and comparative law, legal theory and philosophy of law, human rights, international law, politics. In his PhD research he is trying to combine all these diverse and yet intrinsically related fields while looking for coherence in the European legal order.
Matej is the author of several articles published in the leading Slovenian professional law and political reviews predominantly covering issues of EU law, constitutional law, protection of human rights, law of democracy, and international law. His bibliography in English includes a JeanMonnet Working Paper, a contribution in the book and others. (See Curriculum Vitae)
