short bio.

Last update: 27 June 2010

On 31 May 2010, Bart Van Vooren succesfully defended his PhD at the European University Institute, under the excellent guidance of Prof. Marise Cremona. His doctoral thesis studies legal and institutional questions related to coherence in EU External Relations law, employing the European Neighbourhood Policy as a case-study. The external examiners on the jury were Professors Panos Koutrakos and Ramses Wessel. Starting from 1 September 2010, Bart will take up his position of assistant professor in EU law and Integration at the University of Copenhagen faculty of law.

Prior to completing his PhD, he received his first law degree with great distinction from Ghent University (Belgium) in 2005, where he specialized in international public law and EU Law. His two MA theses at Ghent University concerned respectively constitutional questions related to the 2000 Bush v. Gore judgment, and free movement of persons under the EU-Turkey association agreement. That year he also participated in the P. C. Jessup international law moot court competition, with his team winning the Belgian national round to go on to the international rounds in Washington D.C.

Having completed his studies in Belgium, Bart moved to New York where he received an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from NYU School of Law, supported by a scholarship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation. At NYU, he worked as a research assistant for Prof. Mattias Kumm.

He subsequently commenced his PhD in September 2006 at the European University Institute. At the institute he was active as a representative of the researchers as well as having been a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Legal Studies for two years, having served as its Editor-in-Chief for much of 2007.

Overall, his research interests comprise International Law (with a particular focus on international economic law, as well as public and institutional law) and EU Law (with a particular focus on institutional and constitutional aspects, and all issues related to the external dimension of EU policies.)

His hobbies include yoga, photography, tasting wine, cooking and staring at a computer screen.

[February 2010] I have been working a lot with discourse analysis lately, and have co-developed an online tool towards that end. It is publicly available at http://www.discourse-analysis.eu. In essence, the purpose of this tool is to go beyond anecdotal reference to EU instruments when doing research on the law governing EU external relations, and generate quantitative data for statistical analysis. This enables me to test such concepts as 'coherence' and 'legitimacy', which are common parlance but are often too intangible.
