Bart Van Vooren is currently working towards his PhD at the European University Institute under the supervision of Prof. Marise Cremona. His doctoral thesis studies legal and institutional questions of EU External Relations law in the context of the European Neighbourhood Policy. He received his law degree with great distinction from Ghent University (Belgium) in 2005, where he specialized in international public law and EU Law. Subsequently he moved to New York where he received an LL.M. degree in International Legal Studies from NYU School of Law, supported by a scholarship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation. Within the EUI, he has been a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Legal Studies for two years, having served as its Editor-in-Chief for much of 2007. Overall, his research interests comprise International Law (with a particular focus on international economic law, as well as public and institutional law) and EU Law (with a particular focus on institutional and constitutional aspects, and all issues related to the external dimension of EU policies.) His hobbies include yoga, photography, tasting wine, cooking and staring at a computer screen.
It is publicly available at http://www.discourse-analysis.eu. In essence, the purpose of this tool is to go beyond anecdotal reference to EU instruments when doing research on the law governing EU external relations, and generate quantitative data for statistical analysis. This enables me to test such concepts as 'coherence' and 'legitimacy', which are common parlance but are often too intangible.
