ABOUT

I am currently a doctoral candidate at the Department of Social and Political Science, European University Institute, Florence Italy. My Ph.D. thesis is entitled ‘Dividing Lines: examining the relative importance of differentiation during lower secondary schooling’ and the research for this thesis is being conducted under the supervision of Professor Jaap Dronkers. This doctoral dissertation project investigates the relationship between educational stratification and educational opportunities in modern industrial societies. The objective of the study is to contribute to the understanding on how differentiation within education systems contributes to societal stratification through differentiated educational opportunities.

I most recently spent the Fall semester of 2008 as a visiting student in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While there, I attended graduate seminars and training and benefited from working under the supervision of Professor Adam Gamoran.

Before embarking on a doctoral thesis, I was a research assistant at the Economic and Social Research Institute, Dublin, Ireland where I worked within the education and labour market division. The main focus of my work was a longitudinal project following the school careers of students over the course of second level schooling, the first longitudinal study of its type in Ireland. It was whilst working on this project that I developed the idea for my PhD dissertation and laid the foundation for my background in educational sociology. My time at the research institute also expanded my interest in stratification and inequality issues more broadly.
