Andrea Calderaro is a researcher at the Center for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF) at the European University Institute, from where he also holds his PhD and M.Phil in Social and Political Sciences. In addition, he expanded his education at the California Institute of Technology, Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford - SDP) and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS).

He has been lecturer at the University La Sapienza of Rome in “New Media and International Relations”, and an external consultant at Tactical Technology Collective. He is coordinator of the “New Media in Transition Democracy” International Conference at the University of Oslo (2012), and he is member of the Internet and Politics ECPR steering committee, for which he has served as chair of the section on “Internet and Politics” at the ECPR General Conference (2011).

His current research and publication focus on New Media and International Politics from a comparative and transnational perspective of analysis. In particular, his research centers on the opportunities offered by new media to strengthen democracies by improving transparency and energizing civic engagement. His publications in the field include the forthcoming guest-editing ‘Policy and Internet’ special issue on “Online Collective Action and Policy Chance” (2013), and the inaugural issue of the International Journal of E-Politics - IJEP - “E-Politics in a Global Context” (2010).

He is regularly speaker and panel chair at the International Communication Association (ICA), International Studies Association (ISA), American Political Science Association (APSA), European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR) and the Association of Internet Researches (AoIR).
