The Role of Greek Antiquity in Viennese Fin de Siècle Culture

The aim of my study is to explore the role of Greek antiquity in late 19 th century Vienne se bourgeois society, focusing on a main intellectual figure of that age, Hugo von Hofmannsthal. My working hypothesis is that during that period, on the intellectual level, an initially positive perception of Greek antiquity has undergone transformation towards a more instinctive, hysterical, negative, “modern” image of antiquity.
