Language Requirements

Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English.

The EUI Language Centre runs intensive courses in September and regular courses until the end of March in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

Self-assessment of Language Ability

When applying to the EUI, you will be asked to indicate your language level on the application form. For this, consult the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)  beforehand.

The Institute does not accept proof of language ability through certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS.

Tested Assessment of Language Ability

Candidates invited for interview must sit language assessment tests.

Spoken and written tests in English (similar to the TOEFL or IELTS test) are obligatory for all candidates who are non-native speakers of English.

These take about 90 minutes and can be taken at any time during the interview period. Interviewees holding an English language proficiency certificate are not exempted from the test.

Spoken and written tests in French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish are also carried out in cases where candidates need to be proficient in one (or more) of these languages for their specific research.

In such cases, short-listed candidates will be informed of the additional language test(s) they have to take at interview time by the Language Centre, at the moment they are invited for interview.

The results of the language tests are transmitted to the departments and to the Institute’s Admissions Committee and may also be taken into consideration when the admission of a candidate is decided.

The Admissions Committee may also recommend that a candidate improve language competence before registering at the EUI.
