I gained my Ph.D. at Cornell University, USA (2006) with a thesis entitled “Leadership Competition and the Creation of Norms: A Cross-National Study of Weapons Restrictions”.

My research interests include the study of ethical and normative issues in international relations, transnational relations and the role of non-governmental organizations in world politics, as well as, civil-military relations and the use of military force. My research is in the field of international humanitarian law and focuses on the development of international restrictions on weapons and methods of war having severe humanitarian effects. Among my secondary interests is the study of the emergence of nationalism in the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires.

The working title of the project, which I will pursue during the Max Weber fellowship period at the EUI, is “Civilian Protection and the Conduct of War.” Based on historical analysis and cross-national comparisons, the project explores the processes that lead to the creation of new norms against military practices that cause unnecessary suffering or have indiscriminate effects on the civilian population.

I defended my Ph.D. thesis, entitled “Leadership Competition and the Creation of Norms: A Cross-National Study of Weapons Restrictions” at Cornell University, USA (2006). My doctoral research has been supported by fellowships from The German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Government Department, the Peace Studies Program and the Luigi Einaudi Institute for European Studies at Cornell University.
