Mariano Barbato has studied politcal science, history and philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich. Before coming to Florence he has been an Eramus Student at the University of Aberythwyth, a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Birmingham, and a DFG Post Doc at the University of Bamberg. He taught courses at the LMU Munich and at the University of Erfurt in International Relations.

After his year as a Max Weber Fellow he became a Lecturer (Akademischer Rat) at the University of Passau for European Studies. He was on leave for a position as a Visiting Professor for International Relations at the TU Darmstadt and from 2009-2010 he was Professor for International Relations at the University of Passau. In 2011 his habilitation thesis was accepted form the University of Passau. Major parts were prepared during his year as a Max Weber Fellow under the mentorship of Friedrich Kratochwil. Now he is Privatdozent in Passau and DAAD-Langzeitdozent at the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. 

His research focus is on International Relations and European Integration. His special field is religion and politicis. During his time as Max Weber Fellow he has continuated his research in the post-secular aspects of a global public sphere. Following Jürgen Habermas’ agenda of translating religious semantics to invisage political questions, he works with the religious figure of pilgrimage to interprete processes of globalization. Among the published work on this research is one article at Millennium. Journal of International Relations and one at European Political Science Review, co-authored with Friedrich Kratochwil. Currently he is preparing his habilitation thesis “Pilgrimage, Politics and Globalization” for book publication.

He has widely taught on European Integration (Integration theory, Europeanization, Legitimacy, Foreign Policy) and International Relations (Globlization, Theory of International Relations, International Deliberation and Bargaining, Foreign Affairs) on both undergratuate and graduate level.
