My research interest is in the formal institutional analysis of markets and business units.  My focus is on the evolution of market clearing mechanisms during the Middle Ages and Early Modern period in Europe. In addition, I am working on the question, how partnerships and first firm designs were created by European businessmen during same period of investigation. Thus, my general fields of interests are economic history of the 13th-17th century and in economics, market design and contract theory.

I studied as an undergraduate at the University of Amsterdam and Zurich. I obtained a master degree in economics from CentER, University of Tilburg, and a master degree in economic history from Zurich University. I am expecting to receive my Ph.D. in economics from Humboldt University Berlin 2007. I have been a visiting researcher at the economic department of Stanford University 2002/3 and 2005.

I am a research fellow of the collaborative research center SFB 649 on economic risk. Furthermore, I am editorial assistant of the European Review of Economic History.
