Firat Cengiz graduated from Ankara University Law School in 2002 ranking in the top ten of her class. She began attending the LL.M. programme on “European Union Law” at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Ankara University which she, however, discontinued upon her receipt of a full scholarship from the University of East Anglia Norwich Law School where she studied for a master’s degree in “International Competition Law and Policy”. She finished the programme with a distinction and ranking first among her fellow students.
In 2005 Firat was granted an Overseas Research Award by the British Government and a studentship by the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of East Anglia for the funding of her PhD which she conducted at the Norwich Law School and the ESRC Centre for Competition Policy. Her PhD thesis compares the multi-level enforcement of antitrust policies in the EC and the US under the network management model and in the light of the federal traditions of these polities. In 2006-2007, she engaged in extensive research on the US antitrust enforcement regime at the Georgetown University Law Center, where she was a visiting researcher.
During her time as a Max Weber fellow at the EUI, Firat aims to continue her comparative work on antitrust enforcement, this time focusing on the design of the US private enforcement regime and the lessons which the EU can draw from the American experience. Firat has published journal articles, working papers and presented her work at international conferences. She is also a fully qualified lawyer in Turkey.
