Nenad Stojanovic received his D. Phil. degree in Political Science from the University of Zurich, where he was an Assistant Lecturer (Assistent/Lehrbeauftragter). Currently, he is a Senior Research Fellow at the Zentrum für Demokratie Aarau (University of Zurich) and a Visiting Professor at the University of Sarajevo.

Previously, Nenad earned an M.A. from McGill University (2000) and a Licence from the University of Geneva (1999). He was a visiting student at the London School of Economics (1998) and Sciences Po, Paris (1998-99).

Recently, he received post-doctoral fellowships at the Hoover Chair for Economic and Social Ethics (UCLouvain, Autumn 2008), at the Centre for Federal Studies of the University of Kent (June 2009), and at the EUI where, from September 2009 until February 2010, he will be a Joint Visiting Fellow of the Department for Political and Social Sciences and the Max Weber Programme.

Nenad’s research interests focus on challenges to democracy in multicultural societies. Combining the approaches of comparative politics and contemporary political philosophy, he has explored topics such as group representation (Ph.D. thesis), multiculturalism and nationalism (M.A. thesis), institutional engineering, electoral systems, federalism, models of power sharing, linguistic justice and direct democracy.

He leads the project “Swiss contribution to the constitutional reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina”. His articles have appeared in Representation, Swiss Political Science Review, International Journal on Multicultural Societies.

During his stay at the EUI, Nenad will work on direct democracy and its centripetal impact in a multilingual society. Further, he will explore the concept of equal opportunities in the electoral process.
