Statistics on Applicants and Fellows
Applicants to the MWP
Over the five rounds of applications (2005-2009), a total of 3755 people applied to the MWP. There has been a steady year-by-year increase in the number of applications, exceeding one thousand applicants as of 2009.
The relative majority of applicants for each year comes from the field of Social and Political Sciences (SPS), followed by History and Civilization (HEC). The share of male applicants has been 58% of the total.
Of the 1042 current applicants for the period 2005-2009, 713 were nationals of countries belonging to the European Research Area (ERA), and the MWP received applications from over 70 non-ERA countries.
Max Weber Fellows
Over four years, the MWP hosted 157 Fellows, roughly 40 per year. Although research proposals are mainly evaluated on the basis of their merit, the selection process also entails some rebalancing of the gender, discipline and national composition of the Fellows.
Hence, the share of male Fellows decreases to 52.9% of the total and the number of successful applications from the Social and Political Sciences is below that of the other disciplines.
Finally, some of the countries with the largest pool of applicants (e.g. Italy, France) display lower success rates than the average.
With respect to the Fellows' mobility, data for the first two cohorts (72 out of 74 Fellows) reveal the high degree of geographical mobility both within and outside the ERA.
The survey also shows their upward occupational mobility after completing the MWP.
