Teaching at Local Universities

In the last years, the MWP has expanded its network of collaboration with local universities and has established links with many of the Florence-based American campuses, and Italian Universities offering undergraduate or Master’s level courses.

Among these are James Madison University, Gonzaga University, New York University at La Pietra, FIT/Polimoda and IMT Lucca.

Max Weber Fellows are offered teaching and/or lecturing opportunities at several of these universities.

The Master in European Union Policy Studies of James Madison University in Florence, for example, guarantees priority in the selection process to Max Weber Fellows with competences in line with James Madison University’s teaching needs. Courses can also be team-taught.

Fellows are requested to use state-of-the-art, interactive teaching methods and are constantly monitored and supervised, in order to improve their performance. Grading methods and tutoring of papers as well as assessment skills are developed in conjunction with the academic coordinator.

Fellows receive professional feedback on their performance and an overall written evaluation of their teaching skills by the end of each course.

For an overview of the local universities, see below:

The Rutgers University Study Abroad Program in Florence, founded in 1969, has two different programs. Each admits students in good standing in any American college or university. At the end of each program the student receives an official Rutgers transcript for accreditation purposes at his/her home institution.

The first program is designed for students who wish to undertake a full year of study at the University of Florence (September 1 to June 15) and have taken a minimum of two years of college-level Italian language. Before entering the University of Florence, these students take a six-week set of courses, including advanced grammar and conversation, modern Italian literature, Italian history, and history of Renaissance art. At the University, students enroll primarily in the faculties of Economics, Letters, and Political Science in regular upper-division courses taught in Italian and follow the norms established for native Italian students. At the end of the year the student receives a regular University of Florence transcript as well as the Rutgers transcript.

The second is a sixteen-week program which operates in the fall (late August/early September to mid-December) and repeats in the spring (late January/early February through May). It is designed for students with little or no previous study of the Italian language. Two courses (Italian language and an introduction to Italian history, politics, culture, literature, and art) are required of all students. This leaves room for three elective courses. Electives, all taught in English, include courses in art history, literature, history, Italian cinema, and political science. Instructors are drawn primarily from the faculties and graduates of the University of Florence and other institutions of higher learning in Florence and vicinity.
