Can Aybek is a research associate at the Universities of Bremen and Siegen and a fellow of the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences. With a thesis in the field of “Life-Course and Lifespan Dynamics” he expects to receive his Dr. rer. pol. in 2008 from Bremen University.

In his current research Can Aybek combines theoretical debates on integration processes of second/third generation descendants of immigrants in Western Europe and North America with concepts and methodological approaches from life-course research. His doctoral thesis focuses on analyzing transitions from school to vocational education and training in Germany. Aybek analyses the factors that lead to an achievement gap between immigrant and native-born youth during this transition. He also examines the institutional settings and policy approaches that frame this process on the local level.

Another topic of in interest in Aybek’s academic work is the analysis of family structures and inter-generational relations. He is engaged in research about the timing and circumstances of leaving parental home. Together with Prof. Windzio from Bremen University he examines the socio-structural, cultural and inter-generational factors affecting moves out of parental home for young people of German and Turkish background in Germany.

Aybek has been a visiting fellow at the German Youth Institute in Munich and the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) at Amsterdam University. He is an associate member of IMISCOE (European Network of Excellence of International Migration, Integration & Social Cohesion).
