Workshop on The Politics of Representation , Tuesday 24-25 May 2011, EUI, Badia, Emeroteca

In this two-day workshop, scholars from different universities all over Europe will present work dealing with representation agents, namely, political parties and the structure of political competition, and, moreover, their behaviour in parliamentary institutions. A second line of discussion will focus on electoral systems, especially the reform of electoral systems in comparative perspective, and what are the incentives for political agents to change the rules of the game. The third emphasis of the workshop relates to parliaments and executive-legislative relations. Here, the workshop will debate a wide array of matters, namely, ministerial careers within the executive, coalition politics, and the overall influence of the legislature in the conduction of public policies.

The discussion deriving from the presentations will allow an integrated view of the politics of representation, with agents, channels and institutional structures forming an intricate set of institutions that are interconnected and whose understanding cannot be disentangled. By the end of the two days of presentations, participants will have a more coherent view of the representational machinery in contemporary democracies.
