Migrants in the Spotlight The Migrants in the Spotlight  project, funded primarily by the European Commission, aims to contribute to improved understanding, awareness and reporting on migration issues, third country nationals, integration and related topics among media and students of journalism, including immigrants themselves, in order to facilitate more effective and accurate reporting on migration issues in Hungary, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Slovakia.

migrant voiceThe European Migration and Media Network

Migrant Voice hosts this news platform for the partners of the network.

The Migration & Media network is an informal association of non-governmental not-for-profit organisations in different countries. There are currently six members from five European countries that all work with migrants and the media, to some extent: Migrant Voice, People in Need - Migration Awareness Programme (Czech Rep.), SOS Racismo-Mugak with XenoMedia (Spain), COSPE (Italy) and Menedek (Hungary), and CESVI(IT). The goal of the network is to for the member organisations to exchange information about their work and the state of migration politics in their countries, providing both know-how as well as adding a European perspective to their media and other work.

defaulten-sparda-1Shaping perceptions and attitudes to realise the diversity advantage (SPARDA)  , a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Union, builds upon previous work of the Council of Europe in the field of integration and intercultural dialogue, in particular the White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue , the Intercultural cities  EU/CoE joint action and the Speak out against discrimination Campaign .

Successful integration of migrants depends strongly on the perceptions of the host community of migrants and ethno-cultural diversity. Such perceptions are a product of a complex web of factors and circumstances but to a certain extent they can be influenced by the way opinion leaders, in particular political leaders and media, address such issues. The project addresses the issues of perception, building on the idea put forward by the Intercultural Cities network , that diversity, if well managed, is an advantage for towns and cities. The objective is to measure to what extent populations can be convinced of this through local communication strategies.

Citizenship in the EU is no simple matter. All EU citizens are officially members of a nation state but many share family and languages beyond the Union. The Arabic speakers of the EU have access to over 300 satellite television channels. What is being watched, and how does that viewing contribute to Arabic speakers' understanding of their role in Europe? A consortium of 5 universities is conducting this research (2008 - 2011). The research project is funded by the European Commission

The project "Media Accountability and Transparency in Europe" is a comparative research effort on media accountability systems (MAS) in EU member states as indicators for media pluralism in Europe. The project analyzes the development and impact of established media accountability systems (e.g. press councils, codes of ethics) as well as new media accountability systems emerging in the Internet (e.g. media criticism in blogs).

Attitudes to Migrants, Communication and Local Leadership (AMICALL) is an eighteen-month transnational project. It is funded by the European Union’s Fund for the Integration of Third Country Nationals (European Integration Fund – EIF) under its Community Actions 2009 programme. It specifically responds to Priority 3 of the 2009 programme: “Promote the role of civil society organisations and the local authorities in shaping integration strategies.” Led by a partnership of six European research institutions, with the Council of Europe as an associate partner, the project seeks to provide a platform for the sharing of good practice and the development of new strategies for the promotion of positive attitudes towards migrants and towards migrant integration at the local and regional level. Thus it addresses two core areas of integration policy and debate: the role of local and regional authorities (LRAs) in integration, and the importance of communication and public attitudes.
