Thanos Maroukis is a research fellow at the European University Institute, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, in Florence, Italy and at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) in Athens, Greece.
He has graduated from the Sociology Department of the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences in Athens and holds a Master of Science degree on the subject of “Ethnicity and Multiculturalism” from the Department of Sociology of the University of Bristol, U.K. (2002).
In 2007 he concluded his PhD Thesis at the Department of Economic and Peripheral Development of the Panteion University, Athens. His thesis studied the consequences of migration on the Greek labour market.
His current research develops in two directions: on circular migration under the auspices of the METOIKOS project at the EUI, co-funded by the European Fund for the Integration of Third Country Nationals, and on irregular migration within the research project FRIM (The Fundamental Rights Situation of Irregular Migrants in the European Union) funded by the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Commission (EC). He has also recently looked into human smuggling in Greece as part of a UNODC project on human smuggling in Northern Africa. During the period 2007-2009 he has worked as a researcher in the EC funded research program CLANDESTINO (Irregular Migration: counting the uncountable. Data and trends across Europe).
In the past (2003-2005) he has worked as a researcher assistant in the EU funded program IBEU (Functional Borders and Sustainable Security: Integrating the Balkans in the European Union) and in the composition of the 2003-2005 Greek National Plan for Social integration (reports on gender and migration). His research interests are migration and migration policy, nationalism and diversity, and issues of labour market and labour relations. His research experience includes Southern, Western Europe and the Balkans. He has written several articles and chapters in academic journals and books, and has authored and co-authored 2 books.
