European Forum 2006/7: Content

PROJECT ENDED

2006/7 European Forum navigation

The aim of this European Forum is to explore the use of the PISA data-sets, but also other relevant cross-national data-sets, to provide answers to scientific and policy questions on education and its relationships to various forms of inequality in European societies (including economic, legal and historical dimensions).

A drawback of the PISA data is that they are restricted to the educational achievement of 15-years old students. This makes it difficult (but not impossible) to say something scientifically about the consequences of cross-national variances in educational achievement for inequality in modern society: cultural and societal participation, labour market outcomes, income, family-formation, etc.

In order to stimulate also cross-national analyses of such consequences of educational achievement we shall also use the European Social Survey, which started in 2003. This European Social Survey is organised by the European Science Foundation.

Cross-national panel-data following pupils after their schooling at the labour-market for long periods do not exist. But there are some restricted cross-national panel-data available with a limited number of countries or short term transitions (from school to work). As far as analyses of these other cross-national panel-data can be used to address the topic of ‘quality of education and its relationships to various forms of inequality in modern societies’ applicants using these data are also welcome in this European Forum.
