Directors: Yves Mény and Alexandre Trechsel

The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS), at the European University Institute, in Florence (Italy) and the Research and Documentation Centre on Direct Democracy (c2d), at the University of Geneva (Switzerland), will jointly organise an international working conference on “E-voting and the European Parliamentary Elections”. The conference, which is also being funded by the European Commission, aims to provide a scientific forum for the exchange of information and ideas among practitioners and academics with a view to stimulating knowledge in this new domain.

The conference took place on May 10 and 11 2002 in Florence.

One of the aims of the international conference is to bring together distinguished scholars from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to discuss the feasibility, potential impacts and problems associated with introducing e-voting mechanisms within a European context. The organisers are particularly keen on stimulating interdisciplinary thought and feel that the subject matter provides a window of opportunity to breach some of the disciplinary walls that have emerged between technologists, social scientists and legal scholars. Moreover, close co-ordination with European Institutions, especially the European Parliament and European Commission, will help to ensure a constructive dialogue between scholars and policymakers on this important topic.
