CEETUM is an inter-university and multidisciplinary research centre which brings together researchers specialized in the study of ethnic relations in Quebec and Canada. CEETUM is a centre for research, training, scientific activity, and the diffusion of knowledge in the ethnic studies field. Its activities unite universities, researchers in a variety of fields, educators, actors in the public, private, and community development sectors, students, and all those interested in these issues. Activities include seminars, conferences, workshops, publications and support for research groups and for the development of new projects. CEETUM also provided assistance for visiting professors and for graduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral students.

The Canada Research Chair on International Migration Law focuses on migration controls. It studies international cooperation aimed at reducing irregular migration, new security concepts relating to migration, changes in the status of migrants in our societies and particularly the erosion of their rights and freedoms in the post-9/11 era. In effect, the Chair seeks to deepen the understanding of the relationships between Human Rights, the Rule of Law and Citizenship, as they relate to this emerging figurehead of vulnerability and exclusion, the migrant. After several years at studying the refugee determination process in Canada, the transdisciplinary research team - now comprised of Dr. Janet Cleveland (Psychology, Law, University of Montreal), Pr. François Crépeau, Law, University of Montreal), Dr. Denise Helly (Sociology, INRS - Urbanisation, Culture et Société), Pr. Marie Lacroix (Social Work, University of Montreal), Pr. Abdelwahed Mekki-Berrada (Anthropology, Laval University), Dr. Cécile Rousseau (Transcultural Psychiatry, McGill University), as well as several doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers - has started working on the complex relationships between migration and security. The Chair organizes a transdisciplinary seminar aimed at exploring different features of the migration phenomenon, as well as other conferences and events. The website of the Chair contains the videos of the seminar sessions and other events, as well as information and documentation, in French and English, on various issues of migration control worldwide.

The Canadian Ethnic Studies Association (CESA) is a non-profit interdisciplinary organization devoted to the study of ethnicity, multiculturalism, immigration, inter-group relations and the cultural life of ethnic groups in Canada. CESA also publishes the Canadian Ethnic Studies Journal, a journal published three times a year. The Journal includes scholarly articles, research notes, book reviews, and bibliographic information in both English and French. CESA’s Executive and administrative offices are located at the University of Calgary.

Centre for Refugee Studies

The Centre for Refugee Studies (CRS), founded in 1988, is an organized research unit of York University. The Centre for Refugee Studies fosters interdisciplinary and collaborative research in all of its undertakings. The centre’s efforts are focused in areas related to a comprehensive research program expanding from theoretical to institutional research on several wide-ranging and interconnected areas of study. In carrying out this research, CRS networks with Canadian and international development agencies and academic institutes. CRS invites scholars from abroad to share in the research on global refugee issues. Canadian and international students are supported to undertake field studies and conduct related research. The centre’s approach is interdisciplinary.

The program in Ethnic, Immigration, and Pluralism Studies supports and promotes interdisciplinary research and teaching on ethnic diversity and interethnic group relations in Canadian society in a comparative context. The centre’s purpose is to develop graduate programs in the study of ethnicity, and to involve faculty, professionals and students from various disciplines. The graduate collaborative program offers students the opportunity to take courses outside of their department or faculty as they work towards an interdisciplinary specialization. Courses are offered at Master's and Doctoral levels.

Inter Faculty Initiative on Migration Studies

IFIMS is an interdisciplinary initiative which aims to enhance the communication between scholars from all departments who work with immigration. Since international migration is projected to continue at an increasing rate, IFIMS believe scholars have a responsibility to illuminate its causes, dynamics, and effects on as many different aspects of the human condition as possible. IFIMS aims to create a venue where interdisciplinary discussions on international migration can be converted into original commentary of migration policy issues and innovations in method and theory. IFIMS offers graduate students courses in international migration and plan to develop a proposal for an undergraduate certificate in the study of Migration and Globalization.

The Inter-University Research Centre of Montreal on Immigration, Integration, and Urban Dynamics

Immigration and Metropolis is one of the five Canadian Excellence Centres created within the framework of the Metropolis Project and represents a network of more than seventy researchers who come from several universities everywhere in Quebec. Immigration and Metropolis also takes part in the International Metropolis Project, a network of researchers and decision makers from fifteen countries engaged in a comparative research program in the fields of immigration and integration of immigrants.
