Council of Europe

The Council of Europe aims to consolidate European co-operation in migration. The main intergovernmental body responsible for migration activities in the Council of Europe is the European Committee on Migration (CDMG), whose terms of reference are, "to develop European co-operation on migration, on the situation and social integration of populations of migrant origin and refugees and on community relations."

European Commission against Racism and Intolerance

The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance was set up in 1993 as part of the Council of Europe. ECRI’s tasks are to monitor racism, xenophobia, anti-semitism and intolerance. ECRI examines the situation and draws up reports containing its analyses and recommendations as to how each country might deal with the problems identified. The work takes place in five-year cycles, covering about ten countries per year. The reports are available on line.

European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia

The primary task of the EUMC is to provide the Community and its Member States with objective, reliable and comparable information and data on racism, xenophobia, islamophobia and anti-Semitism at the European level in order to help the EU and its Member States to establish measures or formulate courses actions against racism and xenophobia. The very core of the EUMC's activities is the European Information Network on Racism and Xenophobia (RAXEN). It is designed to collect data and information at national as well as at the European level. This is accomplished via 25 National Focal Points, contracted by the EUMC to collect, coordinate and disseminate national and EU information in close cooperation with the EUMC. Recent publications include comparative and national report on discrimination in employment, housing and education, as well as racist crime data.

International Centre for Migration Policy Development
Inter-governmental organization based in Vienna

ICMPD is an inter-governmental organization funded in 1993 as secretariat of the Budapest process. The original idea was to serve as a support basis for informal consultations on migration and asylum and a platform for cooperation with Central and East European countries. ICMPD focuses on migration policy development. It fosters regional and international cooperation between governments through policy expertise, research and information, dialogue and networking facilities.

The International Labour Organization is a United Nations specialized agency which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights. The ILO formulates international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labour rights: freedom of association, the right to organize, collective bargaining, abolition of forced labour, equality of opportunity and treatment, and other standards regulating conditions across the entire spectrum of work related issues.

International Organization for Migration

IOM was established in 1951 as an intergovernmental organization to resettle European displaced persons, refugees and migrants. IOM has now grown to encompass a variety of migration management throughout the world. Special section on migration

OECD’s work on International Migration is based on continued monitoring of migration movements and policies in member countries and outside the OECD area, and in-depth analysis of the economic and social aspects of migration. United Nations High Commission for Refugees

The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

The office of the High Commissioner for the Human Rights is a department of the United Nations Secretariat. Two of its committees are of interest for migration scholars. The first one is CERD (The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination) the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by State parties that submit regular reports to the Committee on how the rights are being implemented. The second one is CMW (Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families) the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families by its State parties.
