'This Annual Report […] will focus on the activities, changes and results of the EUI in 2010. At the same time it provides an opportunity to reflect on my first months in office, the future of the Institute and my objectives for the remaining years of my Presidency.
During 2010, the Institute as a whole and its three pillars—the Ph.D. programme, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Max Weber Programme for Post-doctoral Studies—developed very well. The existing structure of our unique institution has proved to be robust and successful. However, we will have to adapt continuously to a changing environment in order to progress. […]
Without doubt the Institute is one of the most attractive places of learning and research in the world. In addition to strengthening its character, I would like during my Presidency to contribute to bridging the gap between academic research activities and the world of practice and policy-making. This ‘bridging effort’ and the development of stronger relations with the European institutions are after all purposes which are clearly set out in the Convention setting up the Institute. And I think I can make here my particular contribution.'
