Supporting European Economic and Monetary Union: the role of ELEC

Posted on 02 July 2014

emuA total of one hundred files from the European League for Economic Cooperation (ELEC) collection concerning the period 1985-2013 were recently added to the existing deposit at the Historical Archives of the European Union. Established in 1946, ELEC is one of the founding members of the European Movement.

ELEC is an independent network promoting the economic integration of Europe. As revealed by the archives, the League is run by personalities from the economic and financial world but also from trade unionists and academic circles. ELEC mobilizes its members to support its projects through the circulation of information, the organization of debates and the publication of papers on important European themes.

The inventory for these files is now available on the HAEU website which will allow researchers to follow the progression of the League’s activities. Documents of particular interest portray the network’s involvement in the promotion of European economic integration particularly in the perspective of monetary union which became one of its priority areas of interest.

In this context and as evidenced by the documents added to the collection, the purpose and implementation of the Internal Market, support for Eastward enlargement, the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and transports, as well as social issues, are among the crucial themes from the 80’s up to the new millennium. These themes present interesting paths for researchers of today.

Under an agreement with the European League for Economic Cooperation these files deposited at the HAEU are available for consultation at the end of a 10 year period after their date of creation.
