Posted on 28 July 2014

ces1977The inventory for the Economic and Social Committee sub-fonds for the year 1977 (archival code CES.VOL19) is now available online. The material was recently transferred to the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence by the Archives Service of the Economic and Social Committee in Brussels.

This new sub-fonds consists of 562 files corresponding to almost 12 linear meters shelves. The fonds is freely accessible, as the documents have passed the 30 years closure period for archives of EU Institutions and have been declassified for public access.

The files of 1977 just deposited at the Archives refer to a variety of subject matters, in particular the agricultural policy and the prices for agricultural products, alcohol, producer groups and Mediterranean agriculture. Also the transport policy between Eastern and Western Europe and the electronic aids to the circulation of major roads is present in the files.

In the field of social policy, the main subjects are the equal treatment of men and women, the socio-economic development, the reform of the European Social Fund, and part-time employment as new way to expand the job market. In view of external relations, the GATT tariffs, the Mediterranean political landscape and the conditions for the accession to the Communities of Greece and Spain, and finally the Lomé Convention for opening new negotiations, were amongst the main subjects treated in the files.

Further interesting elements present in the files are the tax harmonization in Europe and the general economic climate, energy policies and nuclear power plants, environmental issues, public health and consumer policies. Finally, the regional policy is dealt with by the ERDF 1976 report and the development perspectives of main urban areas in Europe.

The Committee contributes to strengthening the democratic legitimacy and effectiveness of the European Union by enabling civil society organisations from the Member States to express their views at European level. The organ, formed by the Treaty of Rome, takes part in the decision making procedures by issuing opinions, but has no legislative weight in the final decisions.
