Sorensen fellow researches the economic relationships between Latin America and Europe

Posted on 04 August 2014

getsivaMrs. Getsiva Cayo Durand, a Peruvian researcher and a Sorensen fellow, has spent her July in Villa Salviati searching for material for her thesis that focuses on the relationships between Latin America and Europe as economic blocks.

The research confronts two types of economies, that of France as industrialised country and that of Peru as developing country, embedded in a macro-economic analysis of relations between the European Union and Latin America. The analysis is structured into three areas: Firstly the international economic and political cooperation since the aftermath of World War II; secondly the nature of trade relations in terms of products and economic sectors concerned and the role of diplomacy in the field of trade and commercial relations; and finally the financial negotiations and the technology transfer between the two countries and regions.

Mrs. Cayo Durand’s research in the Historical Archives of the European Union has focused on consulting the fonds related to the Council of Ministers (from 1958 to 1974). She has also consulted the European Commission (CEE/CEEA Commissions) fonds, newspaper clippings from the European Parliament (CPPE) and the European Investment Bank’s (BEI) fonds. Additionally, she has consulted the private fonds of Eduardo Martino, Ivan Matteo Lombardo, Pierre Uri and Etienne Hirsch.

After finishing her studies at the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, in Peru, Mrs. Cayo Durand got an international study programme and moved to France, where she started her investigation about the existing cultural relationships between France and Peru from 1945 to 1975. When she started the research, she realised that there was very little information due to a shortage of fonds referring to economic relationships between both countries. Because of that, her doctorate will is focusing on the economic, commercial and financial relationships.

Mrs. Cayo Durand started her research in France by consulting the Ministère des Affaires étrangères (MAE) archive and Economic and Financial Archive Center (CAEF). She also consulted private archives such as the BNP Paribas, Société Générale and Crédit Lyonnais. In Peru her research focused on the Ministerio de Economía y Finanzas, Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores and Archivo General de la Nación archives. In addition, the researcher consulted the Banco Nacional de Reserva del Perú archive.

Once she had searched through the relevant French and Peruvian archives, in which the results were important regarding to information but still incomplete, the researcher was pushed to extend her investigation to the appropriate international organizations and institutions. That way, she turned to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris and hereinafter she consulted the European Commission Archives in Brussels.

Mrs. Cayo Durand came to the Historical Archives of the European Union recommended by the research consultant, Dominique Barjot, and was granted a Sorensen fellowship, which she had known about visiting the HAEU website. Her future plans include the publication of her thesis. She also plans to continue investigating the multiple gaps that still exist about the relationships between Latin America and Europe after World War II.
