Posted on 20 October 2014

Mauro CappellettiThe archives of Mauro Cappelletti (1927–2004), Professor of Law and former Chair of the Law Department at the European University Institute, have recently been deposited at the Historical Archives of the European Union. The archives comprise more than 30 linear meters of paper files which are now being prepared for long-term conservation at the Archives. An archival inventory to the papers will be drawn and published in early 2015. The historical documents of the Mauro Cappelletti papers up to the year 1983 will then be open to researchers in the reading room of the Archives. Later, the documents will be digitised and made available online.

The Cappelletti collection consists mainly of his correspondence with both Italian and international lawyers. The other part of the material is composed of Professor Cappelletti’s university courses, lessons, conference papers, handwritten and typewritten notes, preparatory versions of his juridical works (books, articles, reviews) and other printed matters.

Mauro Cappelletti, law graduate of the University of Florence, is considered a key figure in modern comparative law and the twentieth century legal culture. He was an internationally recognised authority on the Italian legal system. Here, he founded the Institute of Comparative Law, which he directed for 14 years. In 1970 he joined the faculty of the Law School at Stanford University. In 1976 he moved to European University Institute in Fiesole where he directed, for some time, the Law Department. During his impressive academic career, he visited and lectured in many universities in the United States and in Europe, including Harvard (1969), the University of California at Berkeley (1970), the University of Paris (1981) and Cambridge University (1988-89, as Distinguished Goodhart Visiting Professor).

Mauro Cappelletti received many honorary degrees and has been the President of the Italian Association of Comparative Law. He was also elected member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, of the British Academy, of the Institut de France and of the Royal Academy of Belgium. Cappelletti also chaired the International Association of Legal Science and the International Association of Procedural Law. He was a renowned teacher and researcher who left over twenty books, and hundreds of articles.
