The Association “Friends of the Historical Archives of the European Union” and the Historical Archives of the European Union are organising the international conference: “The External Relations of the EC/EU (1957-2010): Research perspectives and archival sources”. The conference will take place on 18-19 December 2014 at Villa Salviati. The conference enjoys the support of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies
Building the European Union’s foreign policy over the past 45 years has been one of the most challenging aspects of the process of European integration. At the same time, the EU’s role in international politics is being challenged both politically and economically. The study of the formative years of the external relations of the EC/EU has thus become an urgent topic both for scholars and practitioners.
The Historical Archives of the European Union hosts a rich series of public and private archives dealing with the history of the external relations of the EU and enjoys a privileged contact with the National and Foreign Affairs Archives of the EU Member States which also preserve archival fonds on the external relations of the European Union.
This international conference contributes to highlighting this asset, with the ambitious aim to build a permanent working group of researchers, archivists of international archives, former civil servants of European Institutions and archival depositors. The group will discuss how to upgrade the existing documentary and archival collections on the external relations of the European Union from their origins to the recent creation of the European External Action Service.
