Posted on 12 January 2015

The Historical Archives of the European Union together with the Academy of the Arts of Drawing announces a competition for an art installation “Surveillance and Democracy in Europe”, to mark the occasion of the next “Open Day” at Villa Salviati on the 9 May 2015.

The project which is aimed at students of the Academies of Fine Arts of Florence and Carrara was conceived to support, promote and award students for their work in the arts.

The competition foresees the valuation and selection of 15 proposals by a commission made up of art experts, representatives of the sponsor and their partner institutions. The installation, in their design and realisation, must seek to convey in the best way possible with respect for freedom of expression, the theme “Surveillance and Democracy in Europe” promoted and discussed this year by the European Union.

From the 16 January to the 6 March 2015 the students of the Academies can participate by presenting the designs of their works. The jury composed of Dieter Schlenker (Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union), Luigi Zangheri (President of the Academy of Art and Design), Adriano Bimbi (Artist, Sculptor, Fellow of the Academy of Art and Design, professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts), Nicola Nuti (journalist and art critic), Francesca Fedeli (art historian) will select the 15 finalists, who must present before the 30 April 2015 plastic models of their proposed works.

On the 9 May 2015, during the “Open Day” organised by the Historical Archives of the European Union to mark “Europe Day”, the winner will be chosen.

The winning design must be finished by the 13 November 2015 and placed in the Villa Salviati Park.

The 15 plastic models will remain on view to the public until the 26 June 2015 in the gardens of the Historical Archives of the European Union.

A printed catalogue will feature images of the finalists’ designs and provide testimony to the quality of the artists and their artistic efforts.
