Helmut von Verschuer transferred another set of archival papers to Florence

A second transfer integrating the private papers of Helmut von Verschuer deposited at the historical Archives in November 2010 have arrived in Florence.

This second transfer of archival materials consists of four meters of papers composed by official documents of the European Commission, a collection of photographs and travel diaries as well as the academic and personal papers produced and collected during his PH studies in Göttingen.

Helmut von Verschuer was a high ranking official in the European Commission from 1958 to 1987 in the agricultural sector. Amongst others he was assistant to General Director L. Rabot and Director for International Agricultural Trading Negotiations. As such he participated in the GATT negotiations (‘Uruguay Round’) and the accession negotiations for Spain and Portugal. He also served as President of the 'Association œcuménique pour église et société’ in Brussels, predecessor of the Commission œcuménique européenne pour église et société (EECCS) created in 1973.

The Historical Archives of the European Union had already at its disposal a collection of Helmut von Verschuer’s personal papers open for consultation since 2011.This first set consists of 122 files related to the beginnings of his professional career at ‘Bundesministerium für Ernährung’ and to the various activities he carried out following his retirement from the European Commission in 1987. The fonds comprise numerous writings on the the debut of the EEC and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Amongst others, the deposit includes records of the GATT negotiations, as well as the study initiated and coordinated by Helmut von Verschuer "The Impact of Disharmonies in the EC and US Agricultural Policy Measures". Publications, photographs and personalia complete the collection of documents whose predominant languages are French and German.

After archival treatment the new set of papers will be open for consultation.
