Posted on 17 April 2015

On Saturday 9 May 2015, the Historical Archives of the European Union will open its doors to the public to celebrate Europe Day.

The Open Day will start at 10 a.m. with an awarding ceremony in which the jury of the art-competition “Surveillance and Democracy in Europe” will reveal the sculpture that will be installed in the gardens of Villa Salviati.

The contest, directed to students of the Academies of Fine Arts of Florence and Carrara, is organized by the Historical Archives of the European Union in cooperation with the Academy of the Arts of Drawing, and follows the debate on the States’ cooperation in data collection and its ethical boundaries, discussed during the international conference “The State of the Union”. The art-works of the fifteen finalists will be displayed in an open exhibition curated by Andrea Mello. Another exhibition within the gardens of the Villa will showcase the works of art of eleven Academy professors as well.

The ceremony will be followed by a musical interlude by Maestro Marco Vavolo, who will play a selection of national anthems of the 28 Member States of the European Union from his album Europa Mon Amour.

During the Open Day, children and their families will have the possibility to participate in many amusing activities and Circus workshops that will take place outside of the Villa, such as jugglery, trampoline, balancing, cookery. Other highlights will be the performances by “folletti Karacongioli” and by the students of Associazione di Circo en Piste.

Moreover, visitors will be able to explore the rich architectural and natural heritage of Villa Salviati with the guided tours organized by Associazione Città Nascosta.

At 4 p.m., following the end of these activities, the city of Fiesole’s “Novecento” traditional choir will perform a concert, playing its repertoire of traditional Italian songs.

The Open Day at Villa Salviati will end up at 17.00, and it will be followed by a classical music concert of the Orchestra dei Ragazzi from the Fondazione Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, at 17.30 at the Badia Fiesolana Church.

Villa Salviati is accessible to pedestrians only from the gates at Via Faentina 261 and Via Bolognese 156. Car parking is available at the train station FS Salviati in Via Faentina.
