Posted on 22 October 2015

COMPETITION CANCELLED DUE TO TECHNICAL ISSUES

The European University Institute, the Accademia di Belle Arti (Florence) and the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, as organisers, in partnership with the Agenzia Nazionale Erasmus+ Indire (Florence) and Villa Finaly (University of Paris), are pleased to announce a Sculpture Competition to celebrate “65 years since the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community”, with the aim of supporting, promoting and rewarding the work of students from the signatory nations of the Treaty of Paris (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands), and who are attending Italian Fine Arts academies through the Erasmus programme.

The Treaty Establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was signed in Paris on 18 April 1951 at the initiative of politicians Jean Monnet and Robert Schuman, and it came into force on 24 July 1952. The Treaty was able to establish a common market in coal and steel by removing the customs duties and quantitative restrictions which impeded the free movement of these goods.

The competition will have two phases:

  • The submission of an entry form with a design proposal for the project to be presented in the competition.
  • The creation of the work, once the projects have been chosen, at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze (the host Academy).

A jury of art experts from the organising institutions and the partner institutions will select 6 projects.  The overall winner of the competition will be announced during the Festival of Europe on 7 May 2016 at the Open Day of the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU).  The works will be exhibited in the gardens of the HAEU in Villa Salviati until 26 June 2016.  They will then go on display in the Sala Leonardo da Vinci at Villa Finaly, Florence, from 27 June to 21 July 2016.

The participating candidates must each submit a design proposal for the sculpture by 26 February 2016.

Details on the admission criteria, requirements and prize are available in the Art Competition Notice
