Launch of the 2016 Edition of the Sørensen Research Grants

Posted on 18 January 2016

The European University Institute (EUI) launches the 2016 edition of the Sørensen Research Grants. These grants promote research on the history of European integration by the use of the primary resources held at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU).

Each year, a maximum of nine Sørensen Grants are awarded. The Sørensen Grant is open to all current non-EUI postgraduate students and candidates may not benefit from any other grant in the framework of inter-university programmes during the same period. The research time provided at the HAEU in Florence is to last one month.
For the year 2016 applications will be accepted for three separate time periods. Deadlines for applications are: 31 March, 30 June and 15 September. Candidates for the Sørensen Grant must submit their request in English, French or Italian to the HAEU Director, who appraises applications on the basis of relevance of the themes proposed. The grants are ultimately assigned by the President of the European University Institute.

Along with their curriculum vitae, applicants must submit a detailed presentation of the research proposal and a justification stating the need to use the Historical Archives of the European Union, as well as a letter of recommendation from the thesis director or the director of the relevant research programme. Successful applicants will receive a research grant of 1.280€, paid once a short essay on the grant holder’s research has been submitted to the HAEU Director.

The Sørensen Grants for visiting scholars were created in 1993 by the President of the European University Institute, Emile Noel, with support of the European Commission. In 1997 the grants were named after Ms Vibeke Sørensen, former researcher at the EUI History Department and staff of the Historical Archives of the European Union.
