Message from David Fricker, ICA President, on International Archives Day

Posted on 10 June 2016

Today is a very special celebration for archivists and records managers worldwide.

I wish you all a happy International Archives Day.

Through our festivities, International Archives Day provides an opportunity to highlight the unique role of archives and to share experiences of innovation in recordkeeping and archival practice.

This year’s International Archives Day theme of ‘Archives, Harmony and Friendship’ holds a lot of meaning in our archival community. Harmony and friendship is valuable for collaboration and knowledge-sharing but it also speaks to the archives’ role in society, in seeking understanding and meaning through our cultural and social heritages.

I want to congratulate all of you who have organised an event around the theme of archives, harmony and friendship.

Whether a public event highlighting your archival institution, an event celebrating the work of your staff or an online exposition of your collection, your involvement in International Archives Day highlights the rich contribution archival collections make to the world.

We’d love to provide a window into what International Archives Day means to your organisation. If you have pictures of your event, please share them by posting on the ICA website

The theme of this year’s International Archives Day reflects that of the ICA Congress to be held in Seoul from 5-10 September. We welcome you to join us for what promises to be an exciting program of events which further illustrates examples of harmony and friendship from across our global archiving community.

We also hope you will join us again this time next year for International Archives Day 2017, celebrating the soon-to-be-announced theme of the next ICA Conference.

Happy International Archives Day to all,

David Fricker

ICA President
