Posted on 13 June 2016

The archival material of Michel Waelbroeck has been recently inventoried at the Historical Archives of the European Union. The collection consists of 21 files covering the years from 1957 to 2013. It consists, on one hand, of documentation concerning the early years of his professional career (1957-1965) and regarding international law and on the other hand, of notes, correspondence and articles dealing with the “essence” of Community law and legal issues in the field of the European competition. Moreover, two files refer to Michel Waelbroeck’s activities from 2008 to 2014 encouraging the boycotting of Israeli products made in the Palestinian Territories.

Michel Waelbroeck comes from a Belgian family of lawyers. He was born in 1932 and obtained in 1955-1956 his degree in Political and Diplomatic Sciences and Ph.D. in Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He was also awarded an LL.M. in International Law by the New York University. After a period as apprentice spent at the Brussels Bar in 1958, he practiced his profession for various important multinational companies between 1961 and1972. Waelbroeck also had a remarkable academic career and was Professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1963 to 1977. In 1988-1989, he was awarded the Francqui Chair at the University of Liège.

Michel Waelbroeck has written numerous books and articles on Community Law, particularly on the Common Market rules for competition. He was also the director of the “Commentaire Mégret”, an authoritative commentary on the law of the European Union.
