Visit of the 'Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes' to Villa Salviati

Posted on 03 August 2016

During a one week summer school under the theme ‘Menschenbilder’ hosted by various academic institutions, museums, archives and libraries in Florence, PhD students of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation ‘Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes‘ visited the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) at Villa Salviati on Monday 4 July 2016.

The group was greeted by the HAEU Director Dieter Schlenker who talked briefly about the history of the HAEU and its mission in terms of archival preservation and making accessible for the research community and the broad public the historical documents of EU Institutions.

The theme of the excursion to Villa Salviati was “How Europe impacts the life of its citizens”, and to illustrate this, the students were presented archival documents regarding the development of European exchange programmes for young workers and students, the raise of the various European youth movements, the democratization of the European Parliament and the introduction of direct elections in 1979 and finally the women’s movements in Europe and the historical impulse of the “Women of Europe” information service at the European Commission. The excursion concluded with a private tour to the vaults and the grotto of Villa Salviati.

The Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes organises regularly seminars and excursions for PhD students to promote knowledge and debate on science, culture and politics of the host countries and cities.
