2016 Winner of the Research Grants on European Public Finances announced

Posted on 14 September 2016

Nikos Vogiatzis, Lecturer in Law at Liverpool Law School, has been awarded the research grant for European Public Finances, 2016.

Launched by the European Court of Auditors (ECA) and the European University Institute (Historical Archives of the European Union) in 2007, the grant scheme is in its tenth year. The scheme is open to young researchers interested in the EU’s public finances and its impact on wider society. The grant is inter-disciplinary, covering areas such as law, economics, history, and public finance.

Nikos Vogiatzis is the thirteenth scholar selected for this grant. His research project (“Assessing the independence of the European Court of Auditors”) aims at scrutinizing the institutional independence of the European Court of Auditors (ECA), a crucial aspect of its operation and function which has not received its due attention. The main question that his project seeks to answer is: From an institutional viewpoint, to what extent are the Members of the ECA independent?

Mr Vogiatzis plans to spend four weeks between November and December at the Historical Archives of the European Union, where the ECA historical files from 1977 – 1992, as well as a plethora of other primary documents from EU institutions, are housed.
