Posted on 03 February 2017

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, the Historical Archives of the European Union is launching a travelling exhibition: Ever Closer Union – The legacy of the Treaties of Rome for today’s Europe (1957-2017). The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission,  the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the National News Agency ANSA.

The exhibition will be available in all of the 24 official languages of the European Union in digital format and a print version will circulate in various EU member states. The exhibition will be inaugurated in March 2017 in Rome, Italy, during the festivities relating to the signature date of the Treaties (25 March 1957) and then be displayed in various locations throughout Europe. The exhibition will also be launched online

The exhibition is divided into four sections: A Historical Overview addresses the historic roots of the European Union from the Treaties of Rome to the contemporary Union; Unifying Europe through Economy and Law focuses on the economic and judicial legacy of the Treaties; Social Europe and the European Citizenship focuses on the legacy of the Treaties in the spheres of social policy and democratic participation; EEC/EU International Dimension addresses issues of the European international identity. A closing panel Future Challenges Facing the EU will focus on contemporary and future challenges of the EU.
