President Pietro Grasso awarded "A New Treaty for Europe" winners

The President of the Italian Senate, Pietro Grasso, visited the Historical Archives of the European Union on Thursday 4 May 2017 taking part in this year’s State of the Union conference organised by the European University Institute. At the HAEU President Grasso presided over the award ceremony for the “A New Treaty for Europe” competition. 

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, and under the patronage of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the HAEU had launched a competition, titled “A New Treaty for Europe”, for high school students as part of its educational programme in November 2016. The participating classes discussed and proposed elements for a new treaty reforming the educational policy within the European Union during a classroom sessions at the respective school and a debate session in the reading room of the HAEU. Based on these discussions the classes submitted a proposals to a jury composed of members of the HAEU and the Education Directorate of the Firenze Città Metropolitana. 

The winning classes were awarded by the President Grasso at Villa Salviati in Florence: 

First: Class 5 D Institute Elsa Morante, Florence 

Second: 5 A High School Pascoli, Florence 

Third: 4 B Institute Virgilio, Empoli 

During his visit to the grounds of Villa Salviati, President Grasso was also given a private tour to the archives and he met the whole HAEU team.
