Graham Watson Papers Open for Consultation

Posted on 15 May 2017

The papers of Graham Watson, former British MEP and President of the Alliance for Liberals and Democrats in Europe (ALDE), are now available to research at the Historical Archives of the European Union in Florence. The papers were deposited to the Archive in the Spring of 2016. The fonds consists of 105 files, covering the period 1975 to 2016. The vast majority of the fonds is available immediately for consultation. Some confidential documents, however, are closed under the 30 years rule for EU Institution’s historical archives.

In devising the classification system for this fonds, the Historical Archives worked closely with our European Parliament colleagues in the Luxembourg Archives since other Watson papers have been deposited there.

The collection consists of election materials, official statements, papers, correspondence, and administrative documents produced by Watson during his political career.

The fonds primarily encompasses Graham Watson’s career as an MEP from 1994 -2014, reflecting the extensive and varied nature of his political activities both in the European Parliament and further afield. The Graham Watson Papers give an invaluable insight into his telling contribution to the wider international Liberal movement.
